Late try ties up crusaders and hurricanes to global warming

Scientists and activists have argued that climate change is man-made. President Obama has said there's no evidence that the human-caused cause is "a bigger threat to our planet than global warming."

The Obama administration has been trying to tamp down the public over fears that climate change — particularly the threat of rising seas caused by global warming — could trigger devastating storms such as Sandy and Hurricane Katrina.

This week, the administration announced a major new rule to set carbon pollution emissions targets for the electric power sector.

But experts say other ways to save the planet — such as cutting carbon pollution by cutting emissions of fossil fuels, like coal — are more likely to make a difference. They point out that, in many other cases, such efforts have already reduced global temperatures significantly.

Here, climate and energy experts explain how we know the risks of global warming and how scientists agree that the current levels of emissions are likely to be detrimental to future generations. (Sarah Parnass, Dalton Bennett, Jenny Starrs/The Washington Post)

More than half of all American homes have solar panels, said Paul Rieckhoff, director of the U.S. Energy Information Administration's Energy Sustainability Index, which tracks U.S. renewable energy production. His calculations show that homes across the nation that have installed solar panels are now generating more electricity each year than U.S. homes without solar panels.

"There's a huge gap between the levels people are concerned about and what is actually being done, " Rieckhoff said. "It's just so big it needs to be addressed."

Rieckhoff and others are calling for a carbon tax to pay for the climate agenda. At a Senate hearing last week, climate science experts and Republican members of Congress expressed alarm about the potential for the climate bill to backfire, causing Republicans to abandon their push to pass a carbon tax. (A Senate panel had been studying the climate change topic for six months before it voted to hold a hearing last week on the issue.)

"We don't know what the politics would be, " said John Hudak, a top climate skeptic, adding that lawmakers have tried to limit the impact of the bill on the economy, arguing that it wouldn't lower energy costs enough to offset the damage. "It would certainly not save us money."

Republicans have already taken heat from some Republican leaders — especially House Speaker John A. Boehner, R-Ohio — for pushing the bill as a "tax-cut, revenue-revenue thing."

Environmental groups worry that the bill would make it illegal to use energy from renewable sources, such as wind and solar, rather than fossil fuels. And advocates ar

Iaea report eases iran nuclear fears

April 13th, 2017

Iraq's prime minister spoke to United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the chief of the Iraq Joint Intelligence and Terrorism Service (IJS&ST) to discuss the latest developments on Iranian nuclear threats.

Abadi told the UN Secretary General that Iraq has continued to meet its commitments under the nuclear deal and that Iran's recent activities and intentions are no longer part of its "pivotal interest."

He said the government and intelligence services work tirelessly to find solutions for the security of Iraq's security forces and people.

He praised Iran for its "long-term support" and cooperation for Iraq's security forces, saying Iran was "not trying to break the terms of the nuclear deal."

The prime minister spoke on the phone with Guterres to discuss the nuclear talks, Abadi said.

Iran and Iraq have been seeking for months to reach an agreement over Iran's nuclear program, to which Iraq agrees in principle but would still have to fulfill in practice under the terms of the Iran nuclear deal.

In June, US President Donald Trump was briefed about reports that the US was preparing to announce a sanctions relief to Iraq with which the Iranian regime could play an important role in improving efforts to curb Tehran's nuclear program.

In addition to IJS&ST, the Iraq Nuclear Security Coordination Center (INSC), was formed under the deal as part of a broader Iraqi effort to reduce the threat of the Iranian missile program, which is believed to be capable of reaching Israel.

Guterres, visiting Baghdad, was also in the country to visit the nuclear enrichment facilities and other facilities of the Ministry of Oil and the National Security Agency, as well as the Ministry of Defense and the military headquarters of the federal government.

He emphasized the importance of all of Iraq's cooperation with the international community regarding the fight against terrorism and to curb Iran's nuclear program.

"All Iraq should do at its highest level is contribute to the fight against terror, not just its own security, " Guterres said.

On Tuesday, President Trump visited Abu Dhabi and spoke to the emir of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

The trip, which also included Prime Minister Abadi, had a broad range of regional and international interests. It comes as regional leaders on both sides of the U.S.-Saudi border in the Middle East prepare to gather in Riyadh on February 25 for the Arab League meeting to mark the 35th anniversary of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

On Monday, the United States announced a $350 million loan guarantee to help Iraq pay for billions in international oil projects worth billions of dollars over the next five years, includin
